Cryptosteel Capsule will keep your wallet seeds safe and out of sight

A hollow steel cylinder shipped with 800 tiles in letters, the Cryptosteel capsule is what it looks like and nothing more. Assemble the letters to form the basic sentence of your wallet, screw them on the metal gauge and screw the capsule, securely inserting the crown jewel key into a discreet accessory. Put it in a toolbox next to masonry and no one would be the wisest.

The re-gadgetification of things

Children of the 80s who mourn the loss of society based on the gadgets in which they were raised are naturally attracted to cold-encrypted storage. For each device (portable radio, spirit level, tape measure) built into the iPhone, there is another choice that Hardware Wallet Manufacturers (HW) have seen fit to develop and isolate from the smartphone under the brand name. 'opsec.

It makes sense to want to separate your cold from your current holdings (ie everything connected to the web), usually the ones you cherish most and that you do not want. do not intend to liquidate in a hurry. That said, it's sometimes hard to say how much these aftermarket HW accessories really help and how much it's just a cold storage room.

It is clear that there are advantages to keeping your cryptographic resources safe, where hackers, phishers and SIM card exchangers can not work. What is less obvious is that it is absolutely necessary to trap your material wallet in a hermetically sealed room kept at absolute zero with a group of rottweilers and anti-tank guns guarding the sky. Until we see empirical studies on extreme opsec success rates compared to, for example, scribble your seed phrase on a scrap of paper and put it in a drawer, that is to say. is really hard to say.

The mother of all backups

Delivered in a smart tray reminiscent of a box of luxury chocolate, Cryptosteel is described as "the mother of all the backups". Not the dad, not the son, and certainly not the terrifying half-cousin: the steel is all mother. The device, available only or in packets of up to five, is described as "compatible with most key-sharing and secret key-generation algorithms". By that, its manufacturers mean that there are enough letters and numbers in the box to cover most of the 12-word seed permutations. You can put 123 characters on the staff before it reaches its maximum.

Unfortunately, the stick is not adapted enough for a seed of 24 words: during tests, I managed to manage 21 words before running out of space. Since capsules cost $ 100, it seems a little excessive to ask several capsules to store a single seed. That said, 12 words should be enough for most wallet seeds, and you could even fit on 24 words if they are short and you delete the word separators to be inserted.

Better than a steel punch to the face

I like the Cryptosteel capsule, despite its limitations. It's not as alpha as using a steel punch, but it's a lot easier to create the seed of your wallet with a touch almost as permanent. Be careful when the time has come to undo it, as a single slip and your carefully assembled seed will be a soup in the alphabet. It is difficult to say whether Satoshi dreamed of satanic power dreaming of sitting in bed, stringing steel beads on a metal stick, or simply a regression in the making of macaroni art in kindergarten, but it's really fun. More importantly, it's a safe way to save your seeds, as long as you can keep the innocuous capsule in a safe place, away from prying eyes.
